CULTIVAR BEFORE INVENTORY

Choose the visual role before choosing the palm.

All three are cultivated forms of Phoenix dactylifera, but they do not read the same in a finished landscape. Cultivar identity establishes the direction; trunk character, crown condition, clear-trunk height and grove history determine whether an individual palm fits.

For repeated plantings, evaluate the group as a composition. For a focal specimen, character may be an asset.
